Veteran tennis player Deighton “Pa” Roach rolled back the years last night at Diamond Corner, St Peter, to defeat Christopher Renee in three games, 15-21, 22-20, 21-19 to advance to the Round of 32 in the Barbados Road Tennis Open 2024.
That highly entertaining match, lasted 47 minutes and tested every will and sinew of Roach who is well over seventy, as his younger opponent kept him busy and running all over the court during the match-up.
At one time Roach requested a medical time out, but that didn’t daunt his fighting spirit and will to win, especially in the decisive third game which was tied at 16-16 and 18-18 before Roach advanced to a 20-18 lead and grimly held on for the victory, much to the delight of the crowd assembled.
In another thrilling encounter the final match-up of the night that ended just before 11.30 pm, Mosai Williams got the better of Lloyd Burke 21-19, 21-19 in a match that lasted 45 minutes after being interrupted by rain.
Both players exhibited tennis of the highest quality and were warmly applauded by the crowd as Burke went into an early lead in the second game 7-3, before Williams clawed his way back to lead 15-12.
However, Burke roared back to secure an 18-15 lead, only for Williams to dig very deep and tie it up at 18-18 and 19-19, before pulling ahead to win 21-19, in the last game.
In the opening game of the night, Dwaine Hope won a thrilling hard-fought match-up against Leon Carter, 21-13, 14-21, 21-18.
In other results, Shawn Spencer comfortably defeated Kyle King 21-9, 21-14, whilst Marson Gibson cruised past Kyreke Alleyne 21-14, 21-16.

Abbie “Playboy” Clarke, the father of Suave and Azarie Clarke, also rolled back the years to defeat his much younger opponent Jonathan “Specs” Alleyne 21-11, 21-18 inside of 15 minutes.
Teenager Jael Greaves was leading Anthony “Prince” Haynes 21-6, and 10-8 in the second game before Haynes retired hurt.
Curtis Jones also cruised past Clarence “Jim “ Haynes 21-14, 21-11 before an appreciative crowd.
All told the tennis lasted for five hours, including two rain interruptions of about a half hour in total, on day three of the Barbados Road Tennis Open 2024 at Diamond Corner, St Peter.
The action continues this weekend on Saturday at Silver Hill Christ Church at 7 pm and at Dover Christ Church on Sunday at 6:30 pm.
