Several of the fancied men’s players in the Barbados Road Tennis Open 2024 made it through to the round of 16 in the tournament last night at Gall Hill, in  St John.

The action lasted for just over two and a half hours under clear skies, before a good crowd, which included M.P for St John, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, the Honorable, Charles Griffith.

The good weather and talent allowed Julian “Michael Jackson” White to cruise through to the next round as he defeated Dwight Thornhill 21-10, 21-16, inside of 13 minutes.

Davien “Force Ripe” Taylor also brushed aside   Edwin Ward  21-6, 21-14, within 15 minutes.

Veteran Deighton “Pa” Roach went down on his sword as he put up a gallant but unsuccessful fight against Dario Hinds, as youth got the better of age, with Hinds prevailing 21-14, 21-18 in two straight sets.

In the nightcap, Darius “Barrackus” Gaskin was simply too strong for Brandon Arrendell brushing him aside 21-9, 21-10.

In the ladies’ action, last year’s losing finalist Maudlyn Blunt won by default against Nicolette Small, whilst Estherphyne Holder also won by default against Jillian Collymore.

However, Margo Lorde proved too strong for Grace Gill as she comfortably won 21-11, 21-10 while Alisa Walcott saw off Carolyn “Model” Herbert 21-17, 21-17.

The action in the round of 32 in the BRTO 2024 concludes on Sunday night at Dover, Christ Church, starting at 6:30 pm.
