The mother and daughter pair of Kim and Ky’ana Holder have comfortably advanced to the quarter finals of the Barbados  Road Tennis Open 2024.

Playing before a large crowd at Belfield, St Michael last night Ky’ana became the first of the duo to go through coming from a game down to defeat Estherphyne Holder 18-21, 21-4, 21-12, in an exhibition of explosive tennis.

After Esterphyne took the first game it looked as if she would win in straight sets but Ky’ana had other ideas, bouncing back in a convincing and decisive fashion to the dismay of her opponent whom at times applauded her efforts and prowess.

Ky’ana is one of the most attacking women players in the game and appears destined for the very top of the road tennis tree.

In the next game Ky’ana’s mother Kim, a past winner of the BRTO had little difficulty in brushing aside Alisa Walcott 21-8, 21-6.

That demolition job took only 14 minutes to complete.

Next up was Rachel Smith who dismissed Juliet Worrell 21-9, 21-12.4.

Number two women’s seed Maudlyn Blunt had to dig deep to fend off Cherene Ward, but she did so in admirable faction as her as her experience shone through winning 22-20, 21-18.

In men’s action from Belfield , Dario Hinds was comfortable as he overcame  Marson Johnson in straight sets 21-15, 21-15.

But the most enthralling action of the night was reserved for the match-up between Emar “Triple E”  Edwards and Darrius “Barrackus” Gaskin.

In a match -up halted by rain on two occasions the crowd was on its feet as a high quality of tennis was displayed, with some awesome shots from both players.

Gaskin took the first game 21-19, after Edwards had led everywhere except near the finishing line in that opener.

But he bounced back in devastating fashion, as one of the pre-tournament favourites to win the second game 21-12, setting up the decisive third game.

That game was about to start when the rains intervened and caused play to be abandoned for the night at Belfield, around a quarter to ten.

And it’s there that the players will return to on Wednesday night when the round of 16 action in the BRTO OPEN 2024 continues at 7:00 pm.
