Emar “Triple E” Edwards, Julian “Michael Jackson” White and Adrian Scott are through to the quarter finals of the Barbados Road Tennis Open 2024.
Playing before a large crowd at Belfield, in St Michael last night, Edwards overcame Darius “Barrackus” Gaskin 21-16 in the decisive third game, which had been put back from Saturday night because of rain.
That game lived up to expectations with a display of tennis of the highest quality from both players, with attacking shots to behold.
Edwards rushed to a 5-0 lead only to see Gaskin claw it back and reduce the deficit to 7-8.
However Edwards picked up the pace again to hold a 15-10 advantage, which he extended to 20-15 as both he and Gaskin displayed shots of the highest quality.
In the end, Edwards proved too strong winning the game and the set, to seal the victory 19-21, 21-12, 21-16.
Next up was veteran Julian “Michael Jackson” White who eased past Jayden Mayers 21-17, 21-11, with experience winning the day.
In the nightcap game, Adrian Scott overcame teenager Azarie Clarke 21-8, 21-19, with Clarke’s display especially in the second game, assuring all that the future of road tennis in Barbados is in good hands.
All told the tennis at Belfield on Wednesday night lasted for an hour and twenty minutes, finishing on the stroke of 8:20 pm after the seven o’clock start.
The action in the BRTO 2024 moves to Gall Hill in St John on Saturday night at 7 pm, as the round of 16 continues, with one of the most keenly anticipated matches being the contest between defending men’s champion Mark “Venom” Griffith and Kirt Alleyne.
